Model UV-106-W Aqueous Ozone Monitor™
MicroSparge Technology™
The Model UV-106-W Aqueous Ozone Monitor™ uses our patented MicroSparge™ technology to measure dissolved ozone in water with high precision and accuracy. Unlike most dissolved ozone sensors, the instrument does not make use of a membrane that will foul over time. Instead, dissolved ozone is measured by nearly complete sparging (bubbling) of ~2 mL of water with ozone-scrubbed ambient air and integrating the gas-phase concentration of ozone stripped from solution. A small correction, based on the temporal profile of ozone removed from solution, is made to account for any ozone remaining in solution. Because ozone is measured in the gas phase, interferences from particles and dissolved inorganic and organic compounds are removed, making the instrument applicable to both ultrapure water and “dirty” water, such as drinking water, which can contain a wide variety of dissolved inorganic and organic impurities and suspended particles.
The Model UV-106-W Cleaning System is provided with the Model UV-106-W Aqueous Ozone Monitor. The Cleaning System should be used in all applications (except when sampling pure or ultrapure water). The Cleaning System adds citrate to the sample flow at regular intervals to remove scaling and buildup of deposits.
Animation of the Model UV-106-W Operation
The following is an animation showing the two steps involved in the measurement of dissolved ozone using the Model UV-106-W Aqueous Ozone Monitor. Each step lasts ~5 seconds, with a new ozone measurement being made and displayed every 10 seconds. In the first step, the Sample Loop is overfilled with the sample water while at the same time air pressure from the Air Pump is used to empty the Impinger, which contains water from the previous measurement. During this stage the light intensity (Io) is measured in the absence of ozone. The states of the 5 valves are then reversed and air forces ~2 mL of water from the Sample Loop into the Impinger and sparges the sample to remove ozone and carry it through the Optical Bench, where the temporal profile of ozone is measured over a period of ~5 seconds. The total mass of ozone present in the 2 mL of water is determined by integrating under the concentration profile and applying a small correction for ozone in the "tail" of the exponential decay curve. Dividing the mass of ozone by the mass of water in the Sample Loop and multiplying by 106 gives the ozone concentration in ppm (also g/m3 and µg/mL).
Schematic Diagram
The schematic diagram below shows additional components necessary to the operation of the instrument. These include a bleed valve to adjust the air flow rate, pulse dampener to reduce air flow fluctuations, ozone scrubbers to remove ozone from ambient air used to sparge the sample and to scrub ozone from vented air, air particle filter, water trap to protect the optical bench from exposure to liquid water, Nafion tube to equilibrate humidity with ambient air, and an air flow meter.
